At IBC on Friday 12th September the DRM Consortium launched the first DRM AM model receiver produced in India for India and for global use. The AV-DR -1401 designed and produced by Communications Systems Inc under the brand name Avion Electronics of India.

It is a digital DRM SW, MW, as well as analogue AM and FM receiver with stereo reception, offering some of the extra features that make digital superior to analogue: more choice in perfect sound (MPEG audio), multimedia applications and local interactive text and media (Journaline), automatic tuning by station, not frequency, emergency alert capability etc.

    DRM Press Release

AMSTERDAM — At IBC2014 the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium unveiled the first DRM AM receiver designed to comply with the relevant Indian specifications and to be fit for global use. The Avion AV-DR-1401 from Communications Systems Inc. allows DRM reception in the shortwave and medium-wave bands, as well as analog AM and FM reception.

“Interest in India toward DRM keeps growing. Even though we have some issues, such as a few industry stakeholders still trying to turn the attention to FM networks instead of concentrating on DRM, our government’s commitment is strong and clear, said Ankit Agrawal, director of Communications Systems Inc.

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is planning a strong presence at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS) 2015 Conference in Kuala Lumpur in March. DBS is one of the premier digital events in Asia and DRM is the universal, openly standardised digital broadcasting system for all broadcasting frequencies.

On the opening day on March 4, there will be a general update titled ‘DRM - Delivering to All Your Needs’. The company will also offer participants a chance to experience its new Avion DRM radio, which has recently been unveiled in India.

New codecs that deliver better sound, hybrid slide show innovations, and more countries broadcasting in DRM were some of the latest developments presented by the Digital Radio Mondiale group at last week’s Digital Broadcasting Symposium in Kuala Lumpur.

Lindsay Cornell (pictured) explained the latest development in hybrid radio, which now enables RDS, slide shows and other program service information to be compatible across different standards. This will bring benefits for both receiver manufacturers and audiences.
